What to Wear During Your Engagement Session

Engagement sessions are meant to celebrate love, to show who you are as a couple, and to have fun of course:) Discussing your vision for engagement photos with your photographer is important, so they can help capture moments that you cherish for a lifetime.

I often get the question about what we should wear, so I have some advice to make your engagement photography session awesome.

Wear Clothes that Match the Vibe or Style

This might sound basic, but it’s true. If you are planning a lifestyle session at your home, where you’re having fun, cooking pancakes and hanging out in the kitchen like you would on a saturday morning, wear relaxed, comfortable clothing. It suits the scene and makes the photos believable.

If you are planning to have your engagement session on a beach or nature park and are going for a light and airy vibe, then I would suggest soft colours. Whites, light blues, beige, etc make great choices and won’t distract the eye.

If you are planning to have more dramatic looking photos, with lights, city elements, etc I would suggest clothing that looks a little more formal. A dress , or a suit would compliment a dramatic style or vibe. You can go with more dramatic colours here, greens, yellows, reds, etc

Generally Avoid Stripes and Wear Solid Colour

I’m not saying avoid stripes at all costs, however stripes generally distract the eye from the subjects, and have you looking at clothing more than expressions, or emotions. This is why I suggest wearing solid colours, as it limits distraction of the eye.

Bring a Second Outfit

Bringing a second outfit, when combined with another location can give you a lot of variety and make it look like a 2nd photo session. I like to suggest one casual outfit, and one more formal outfit to couples, to get the most variety!

Footwear

Be comfortable! There’s a couple things that you should consider when choosing footwear. If you plan on switching locations or doing a lot of walking between areas, bring a comfortable pair of shoes or sneakers that you can change into when moving around. This may also protect your footwear for the engagement session from getting dirty, scraped, or etc depending on location.

During my sessions I often have people walking, dancing, laughing and moving! It’s important to be comfortable so you can focus on those moments and not focus on your feet!

A couple notes for shoes with heels; be aware of the area you will be walking in. I’ve been at engagement sessions on deck or dock areas where there are gaps in boards that can be hazardous for people who wear shoes with pointed or skinny heels.  Also for parks or areas where the ground is soft, skinny heels can sink into the ground and it can be difficult to walk!

Bring Backup Clothing!

I always like to have backups. When shooting outside, there could be inclement weather, puddles, grass, mud, sand, water, etc that may cause you to change your clothing. Always ideal to have a backup :)
